Bread depicts compelling literal and figurative roles in the Bible.
The more I ponder the examples, the more awestruck I become at the parallels. For Jewish people, bread represents a significant aspect in the Feast of Passover. Upon their liberation from Egyptian captivity, the Children of Israel were to eat unleavened bread during the Feast of Passover to signify and celebrate their miraculous exodus from Egypt and preservation as a nation! The Old Testament describes how the Israelites, while wilderness wandering for those forty years, grew hungry. Very hungry! Our omniscient Creator knew of a nutrient dense food that would sustain His people for indefinite, lengthy periods of time: GRAIN! For that reason, the Israelites didn’t dine on tofu, kale salad or pastured beef.
God’s people weren’t all Keto and Paleo, folks!
They were given daily BREAD that “rained from Heaven” as described in Exodus 16:4! “The LORD said to Moses, ‘Indeed, I will rain bread from heaven for you.'” God saw fit to feed His people bread in foreshadow of the sustaining power Jesus would display in the lives of those who love and serve Him.
John 6:27 records Jesus telling His disciples:
“Labor not for the meat which perishes, but for that meat which endures unto everlasting life, which the Son of Man shall give unto you.”
This statement is profound!
- Firstly, by likening Himself to bread, Jesus is telling us that He is indispensable for life!
- Secondly, the life Jesus references in this passage is not physical life, but eternal life.
The physical bread we eat every day – the croissants, muffins, pancakes and cinnamon rolls – all perish. As delicious and nutritious as they are, they’re temporary sustenance. Jesus, His Word, is spiritual bread that never perishes; He gives eternal life for those who follow Him!
More than I crave salty, butter-slathered toast, I want to hunger for the true Bread of Life! Today, and everyday, may you also be hungry to read and feast upon Jesus’ words in the Bible – your daily bread!

Metaphorically , poeple yearn for crumbs not knowing that God’s love is the loaf of life. To me, breaking bread is the act of communing with God and studying his word or sharing with others their ingredients, recipes.
I wholeheartedly agree! Thanks for sharing!
What I love about bread from freshly ground grain is the density, and how it satisfies my hunger for long periods of time. It truly does satisfy my belly, just as my Savior, Jesus, satisfies my soul…and both always leave me wanting more!
Beautifully stated and I know it comes from a sincere heart!
In the light of these revelations Holy Spirit is revealing to you, so many scriptures take on a new meaning! Aad it’s so hysterical…the things one knows full well from being a Word Lover, yet never ever thought to comtemplate! For instance…I KNOW that the Hebrew children under Moses’ leadership were hungry in the desert and that God fed them manna. What Christian doesn’t know that? BUT #1 I had never considered that bread was ALL He fed them (well…there was that brief incident with the quail, but they were surely sorry for that 🙂 and #2 It never dawned on me that bread and bread alone would sustain a human. I LOVE reading your posts!
That’s wonderful and it encourages me to know I encouraged you! No matter how long one follows Christ, we will never exhaust the fullness of His Word and the facets we can learn by remaining teachable! Carry on!
